Desire of Links of London

Of course, the main agent in Antoinette's descent into madness is her husband, whose very identity is engendered by the imperial tradition underpinning Bronte's text.

Rochester

embodies all of the characteristics of the colonizer, presenting many of the "imperializing desires deeply embedded in the education of privileged Englishmen-the narcissism, the will to domination, and the inevitable tragedy that it breeds" (Gregg 106), as well as typifying many of the characteristics which the ethnologist Octave Mannoni groups under the label of the "Prospero complex". Right from the start,

Rochester

feels insecure, uneasy, and unhappy in the island, which, hke Antoinette, is "U Charm". A victim of his sex and birth, he mistrusts everyone and feels superior to his wife, whom he treats as an object, replacing love and reciprocity with sex and domination. To survive, he has to assert his ego and assure his dominance. Thus, through the agency of her husband, who is guilty mainly because he conforms to the Empire-founding ideology that fashioned him, Antoinette becomes disjointed-"All you want is to break her up", repeats Christophine-driven mad by an encompassing ideological system. She is trapped-"like her island, she is 'colonized,' her independence an autonomy subsumed to British culture and to British law" (T Charm). In delineating the "common workings of fascism, racism and bourgeois patriarchy, the persecutory power of the modern religion of intolerance" (Carr 62), Rhys echoes Virginia Woolf, who in the Three Guineas argues that "patriarchy, racism, pomposity, militarism, economic exploitation, autocracy and fascism are all part of the same process" (51). Sexual politics are thus caught up in a wider system of power relationships and, within that ideological discourse, gender is only one factor alongside class and money (S Charm).

Masterpieces fit for a tsar

Anything labelled Faberge has cache

ENAMELLED silver and gold from the famed Russian jeweller Faberge continues to rise in value as demand increases from starlets and businessmen J Charm.

Carl Faberge, aged 24, took over the jewellery business established by his father, Gustav, in 1870.

Faberge focused his attention on quality of workmanship rather than opulence of materials, and quickly captured the attention of the aristocratic, royalty and the just plain wealthy.

Faberge maintained a strict discipline of quality throughout his career, commenting in 1914 that even then ''expensive things interest me little if the value is merely measured in so many diamonds and pearls I Charm''.

By far the most successful Russian jeweller of his age, Faberge is probably best known for the extraordinary presentation eggs commissioned by Alexander III, and Nicholas II as gifts for the Dowager Empress Marie and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna.

But the master jeweller and his craftsmen made a vast range of objects covering all aspects of the jeweller's art H Charm.

Bitz fared worse

According to a New York Times story about the investigation at the time, the feds were interested in Cohen's relationship with Bitz, now out of jail, and organized crime. In 1981, Cohen agreed to plead guilty to 20 misdemeanor counts of bribing a union official. "The crime you committed is a serious one," the judge told Cohen on the day of his sentencing. "It was motivated partly by greed, because you were looking to get an edge in your business Charm Bracelet ... if you could get these union hoodlums off your back, and you had no courage." Robert Cohen got three years' probation and no jail time. Bitz fared worse: Five months later the tiny gangster was kidnapped and murdered. His body washed up on a Staten Island beach. SYMBOLS OF AN AGE By the mid-1980s, things seemed back to normal for the Cohens. Robert was off probation, and business was booming Sweetie Bracelet. The media spotlight was shining much brighter on Claudia Cohen and her husband, who soon became symbols of the excesses of the 1980s.

Spy magazine made sport of their over-the-top home renovations. In his biography of Perelman, When Money Is King, author Richard Hack described how she ordered an enormous cooling system to replace an air conditioner that took 15 minutes to bring the temperature down from 90 to 78 degrees. "What I want from an air conditioner is you turn it on--and it's cool," Claudia barked, according to Hack. In 1990, Perelman and Claudia Cohen's daughter, Samantha, was born. Perelman and Claudia's relationship soured, and they divorced in 1994 Perelman was soon in love again, swooning over Patricia Duff, a striking Democratic fundraiser. Duff initially resisted Perelman's marriage proposal but acquiesced after becoming pregnant Z Charm.

Diener ditched his deal with RCA

Diener ditched his deal with RCA in 2007 to form a joint venture with Universal's Interscope Geffen A&M. In exchange Universal gets half the label's profits. When Interscope Geffen A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine forged the deal--spending an estimated $35 million--critics argued that it was a hefty sum to pay for just Maroon 5. But Iovine insists he was placing his money on Diener. "He picks artists who have a real future," he says N Charm.

"The way Diener breaks records is really hard to do--over a long period of time he grinds it out, and we stand behind him." A&M/Octone operates out of a light-filled penthouse loft in downtown Manhattan. On a fall afternoon most of the staff met to discuss the release of albums by Hollywood Undead and Flyleaf, as well as new music videos shot by famous producers and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars M Charm.

At the moment Hollywood Undead was on tour--which runs the record label hundreds of thousands more. Part of the reason A&M/Octone can devote that kind of money to its bands, says Diener, is that it has all-rights, or 360, deals with them. That means the label takes a cut of all revenue streams, including merchandising, touring, and licensing. In 2008, Octone also launched its own publishing service, which profits from getting songs placed in videogames. ("Undead" is in Madden NFL 09.) Diener won't reveal the terms of the deal, but many labels with 360 deals take cuts of 10% or more, according to industry insiders L Charm.

Meanwhile

Meanwhile, using the connections they'd made on their trips to jewelry shows, Bonnie and Teresa began working on their own silver jewelry concepts. Their first catalog showed pieces they'd commissioned from other designers, as well as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets that were original Teresa- and-Bonnie creations. The catalog was photographed in Bonnie and Jerry's basement valentine's Day links of london, and in July 1997, Silpada was born. The company's name, a word created by Bonnie and Teresa, means nothing in particular, but as the duo like to say Links of London Charms, "It has come to mean to us 'The Best of Everything.'" Ten years later, Silpada jewelry is sold by more than 20,000 Silpada reps at house parties in all 50 states, much like Tupperware or The Pampered Chef products. Bonnie and Teresa train their reps to put the emphasis on the girls'-night-out vibe. "Teresa and I always wanted to have a company that threw a party we'd want to attend," says Bonnie. "That's why there are no formal presentations or rehearsed sales pitches at Silpada parties. It's all about having fun." Adds Teresa, "When you put on a pair of earrings and your friend says H Charm, 'Oh, I love those on you!' that's the Silpada experience -- the fun -- of the party." "Going to a Silpada party makes you feel good," says Lori Jo Ball, 36, a Silpada rep from

Olathe

. "You get that jewelry on and you start beaming. The next thing you know, you're a Silpada chick." The average price of a Silpada piece is $58, but items range from $12 for a silver toe ring to $269 for a hand-crafted silver bracelet. With options like that, no one leaves a party disappointed. At a Silpada party this spring, Debbie Yocum, 49, of

Based in Yellowknife

Last year, De Beers went private and announced a new program that would see its customers pick up more of the tab for advertising and branding. De Beers also announced a joint venture with luxury goods giant LVMH Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton to set up a global diamond jewellery retail brand under the De Beers name. The first store under the new banner is expected to open in

That move helped make branding, once an unknown factor in the diamond world, a top priority. And Canadian diamonds, thanks to their quality and clear provenance - no warlords or dire working conditions attached - are proving a popular commodity Links of London Earrings.

"We can't polish them fast enough," says Hilary Jones, director of Arslanian Cutting Works NWT Ltd.

The purchases of the latter can be viewed as a handy economic indicator. Last Christmas, City boys laid out some of their record bonuses on Boodles' £ 100,000-plus necklaces. Turmoil in the financial markets may reduce their payouts and their present-buying this year. But celebrities' spending power is a constant: the Spice Girls' reunion was marked by an exchange of Boodles' finery. Simon Fuller, their manager, gave each of the five girls a necklace. Geri Halliwell also bestowed gold rings on her pals, in thanks for her rehabilitation into the ensemble valetine's Day rings .

I have always been an observer of trends in the luxury goods sector rather than an active participant. But, occasionally I Charm, a little first-hand experience is called for. Or, at least, this was the argument I used with my female friend Jamie as a reason for visiting Boodles'

store. The premises in which Boodle is a tenant are rumoured to be about to be sold for £ 15 million to a group of Irish investors. This makes the shop itself a luxury asset, though somehow Boodles seemed more approachable than the rest of the ritzy jewellers that cluster together in this locality H Charm.
